WHEN we talk about car bulbs there are different types, but the most common are halogen, xenon, and LED.

Halogen and xenon are the elements that are used in the bulbs. These all display fluorescence and illuminating behavior. Halogen and xenon are also used for their better illuminating properties with more warranty.

LED bulbs, halogen bulbs, and xenon bulbs are available in different voltages. You can easily select the voltage according to your choice. All three bulbs have their benefits, so let’s compare the halogen, xenon, and LED.

Halogen bulb

Halogen bulbs have different varients ranging from H1, H3, H4, H7, H8, H9. These are other halogen bulbs that differ in their power, voltage, and socket type.

Principle:

The basic principle of the halogen bulbs is based on the tungsten’s ability to emit light when the electric current is passed through them. They can get oxidized due to the external environment exposure. A glass cover is placed over the filament to provide protection.

The halogen gas is filled in the tube, which then illuminates to give light. The halogen gases may be iodine or bromine. The best thing about these halogen bulbs is their more service life than the others. So, it is long lasting and remains clear and transparent for a more extended time.

Advantages:

  • It has a more service life
  • comparatively cost less than other bulbs
  • high laminating capacity
  • compact and unique styles

Disadvantages:

  • Breakage inside the glass causes the lamp to burn or blink. If there is not complete contact of the bulb with the filament, it may get fused.
  • The improper installation leads to the blackening of the bulb hence lowering the intensity of the light.

Xenon Bulb

Principle:

It is based on the working of the electrodes, which are made up of the tungsten element. When they receive voltage, an arc of the electric current is produced, which is the source of light and produce light. These electrodes and the gas of xenon and the mercury’s vapor are filled in inside the quartz glass. 23,000 to 30,000 voltage of electric current is applied. These xenon bulbs convert the voltage of the electric current into the high-voltage discharge.

Advantages:

  • It shows color like day time with an optimum temperature. It varies from 4300 to 6000 Kelvin.
  • It has a long service life of almost 2000 hours after regular use. It stays transparent and clear for an extended time. So, It is the best thing about it that you do not need to feel dim or vivid light.
  • It is resistant to vibration as it has a quartz glass over it. It protects the bulb from external fluctuation and vibrations.

Disadvantages:

  • Sometimes, the low wiring of the bulb may cause the bulb to burn out. It fuses the bulb, and the light is not emitted when the switch is on.
  • The filament and the bulb’s temperature may increase, leading to a decrease in the bulb’s intensity. The color of the light gets changed from white-yellow to green or some other color.

LED bulb

Principle:

Led has the semiconductor diodes to emit light. These LEDs produce the white color light whenever an electric current passes through it. It is designed so that radiator is present to cool the LED matrix whenever it gets hot.

Advantages:

  • It is more efficient with the power of 25W.
  • LEDs are environmentally friendly, so most people are using LEDs to save our environment.
  • It has a maximum life span of 12 years, which is much greater than the other bulbs.
  • It has better visibility and the illumination of the light with high intensity.
  • It is useable for all the seasons, as white light is comfortable in summers and winters.

Disadvantages:

  • Its intensity may get decrease with the time
  • It starts blinking and overheating due to its driver malfunction.

These are the primary advantages and disadvantages of Xenon, Halogen, and LED bulbs. Before buying, get to know about the fundamental difference among them.
