Mercedes-Benz has confirmed it will withdraw from the small van segment next year, discontinuing both the Citan and T-Class models, along with their electric variants. The move marks a shift in strategy for the van division as it focuses future investment on midsize and large commercial vehicles.
In a statement emailed to Reuters, the company said: “In line with our Mercedes-Benz Vans strategy ‘Growth in profitable segments’, we are targeting our investments and further optimizing our product portfolio. Therefore, we will focus on the Midsize and Large size Van segments in the future and end our engagement in the Small Van segment next year.”
The decision follows reporting by German trade magazine Automobilwoche, which said the Citan – developed for commercial use – and the T-Class – aimed at private customers – will be phased out by mid-2025.
The report also noted that the move brings an end to Mercedes-Benz’s long-running collaboration with Renault on these models.
Mercedes-Benz has recently reiterated its commitment to realigning its van strategy around segments with stronger profitability and long-term potential. The exit from the small van market reflects this shift, especially as the company continues to invest in electrification and high-margin vehicle categories.
