Nissan Navara NP300 2.3 dCi 190 Auto Double Cab:

2016 is going to be the year of the pick up, with the Nissan Navara forming the basis of new contenders to the market – Mercedes and Renault.

The term ‘car-like’ has been used too freely in commercial circles recently, but with its multilink suspension and crossover features the new Navara Navara NP300 really is a game-changing pick up

What’s hot?

  • Okay, it might ride on a modified version of the current Navara’s hard-wearing box-frame chassis, but the big news for the new NP300 in Double-Cab form, has to be the addition of independent suspension all-round. Three-door King Cab versions make do with the less sophisticated leaf spring set-up. On the road, the independent set equals an impressively refined, car-like ride.
  • The Navara NP300 is no sportscar, its tall dimensions see to that, but body roll is well contained, there’s plenty of grip from the chunky tyres and surprising precision to the steering, that make this the best-handling pick-up we’ve driven.
  • Despite the sophisticated suspension, the Navara remains as good off-road as it has ever been, but now with extra tech including hill-descent control.
  • Our Navara was powered by the familiar 187bhp version of the 2.3 dCi diesel engine that’s used in various other Renault and Nissan commercial vehicles. In our opinion, although refined in the Navara, it’s no ball of fire performance-wise. However this engine is well-matched to the slick-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission, which we’d pick over the other Navara transmission option, the notchy six-speed manual. This autobox’s sophisticated nature is down to the fact it has been borrowed from Nissan’s luxury division, Infiniti, and is used in their QX70 SUV.
  • Even with the auto box, the Navara NP300 187bhp version of the 2.3 dCi is still capable of 40.3mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 183g/km – impressive when compared to rivals.
