The look is…quirky. But the Doblo Work Up has a lot going for it

Fiat Doblo Work Up LWB 1.6 Multijet 16V 105hp

What is it?

It’s probably safe to say that Fiat’s Doblo Work Up is in a class of its own. Nothing looks quite like it and nothing matches it in terms of convenience, not at this size anyway.

47.1mpg puts it way ahead of the usual 4WD pick up

It’s a pick-up but not in the conventional sense. It offers a large loadbed almost 4.2 metres square, with dropsides all round, making it far more versatile than a conventional pick-up.

With dropsides of aluminium alloy and a sturdy bed made from high-resistance steel and a floor created from anti-slip multilayer wood, it’ll take sand, shingle, or pallet-loads equally well – according to Fiat, three Euro pallets or 33 boxes of fruit!

The Doblo Work Up is offered with two diesel engines – a 1.3-litre 90hp unit and a 1.6-litre Multijet unit producing 105hp and 290Nm of torque. The test vehicle, a long-wheelbase model, was equipped with the more powerful engine.

It has bags of go and with 290Nm of torque pulls strongly. It’s mated to a six-speed gearbox which is pleasingly smooth in operation. Stop/Start is standard, as are ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD electronic brakeforce distribution, but ESC (electronic stability control) is an extra.

The cab is a little plasticky, but it’s well equipped
