The former remains the most efficient way of paying, with drivers escaping fines thanks to the automatic payment system. This format records the number of days a vehicle travels within the charging zone each month and bills the account holder’s card accordingly.

What’s more, from 2015, CC Auto Pay users will be able to pay by Direct Debit.

The updated charges are applicable from 16 June 2014, with TfL hoping the increase will stop both business and private users from driving in Central London for all but the most essential daytime journeys. The charges are enforced between 07:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday.

Money raised over the next five years will contribute an income of £82.7m, which will be reinvested into London’s transport network, including modernisation of the city’s roads.
